Colby Pretz
To Colby, an energetic seven year old,
firefighters are the greatest.
As a MDA Junior Goodwill Ambassador,
Colby, who has Spinal Muscular Atrophy, is an
active participant in MDA's "Fill the Boot." During "Fill
the Boot",
he meets many firefighters in the King County
communities while raising funds for
wheel chairs, providing clinic visits,
sending children to MDA summer camp,
and other services. One of his best "Fill the
Boot" activities is the Seattle Storm basketball
game where he has assisted
with presentations.
After "Fill the Boot" Denn, Jodi, Jelisa, Colby, and Ty Pretz poignantly describe their experience with firefighters at www.iaff27.org:
"Over the past year or so, we have come
to a new realization of just how important
you are to us. What amazing people you
are to give so much to the people in
your community by serving and protecting
them every day of your lives and then
take that extra step to volunteer your
free time to help out the families of MDA, like
mine, by giving even more of yourselves;
whether it be money or your day off,
or even the time it takes to show a
curious little seven year old boy affected
by Muscular Dystrophy every little knob
and nozzle, every compartment and hose,
every tool and light, and even give
him a ride in your truck.
Thanks to you, our son know what a special group of people
you are, and we are proud that you care so much because
we care so much about you. Thank you from the bottom of
our hearts."
When Colby is not at an MDA event,
he is a third grader attending Alpac
Elementary School. In his spare time,
Colby also enjoys a game of his Play
Station 2, and bringing in the basketball
to center court at the Auburn Riverside girls' high school
games. Colby's family has a saying for
him, "What he lacks in physical strength, he more
than makes up for in personality!"
He had his second year at MDA summer
camp last year. Camp is important to
him and other campers because they
have experiences that they otherwise
would not get a chance to have. Besides "Fill the Boot",
he is also involved with Muscular Dystrophy's "Hop-A-Thon" program
which provides materials to help children
understand that there are people in
our community with not only neuromuscular
diseases but other disabilities as well.
