What is MDA?
The Muscular Dystrophy Association is a
voluntary health agency,
which has a dedicated partnership between scientists and
concerned citizens aimed at conquering neuromuscular diseases,
that affect more than a million Americans. The programs are funded almost entirely by private contributions.
The association receives no government grants.

What diseases are MDA striving to defeat?
The muscular dystrophies, motor neuron diseases, inflammatory myopathies, diseases of the neuromuscular junction, diseases of the peripheral nerves, metabolic diseases of muscle, myopathies due to endocrine abnormalities, and
other myopathies.

Is muscular dystrophy a group of diseases?
Yes, there is no single disease called muscular dystrophy.
Muscular dystrophy is a group of hereditary diseases muscle
destroying disorders, which vary with inheritance pattern,
age of onset, initial muscles
attacked, and
rate of progression.

Does Seattle's MDA program have local clinics?
Yes. Children's Hospital Medical Center and University of Washington Medical Center
are

What does MDA do?
MDA combats neuromuscular diseases through basic and applied
scientific investigation, local comprehensive programs
of medical services and programs, summer camp widespread professional
and public health education.
Besides MDA Labor Day
Telethon, there are many local fund raising projects.

What do MDA clinics offer?
MDA clinics offer an interdisciplinary team approach toward
initial diagnosis and follow-up care. The physicians, experts can advise about
all aspects of medical management of neuromuscular disease, including occupational,
speech, respiratory, and physical therapy. MDA assists
with purchase and repair of wheelchairs of leg braces when prescribed
by MDA clinic physicians.
The purchase of communication devices is also assisted.

Has there been an achievement award given to MDA?
MDA is the first nonprofit organization honored with the American Medical Association's
Lifetime Achievement Award "for significant and lasting contributions to the health and
welfare of humanity."
